Bel
was regularly offered twelve bushels of’ flow’ which are equivalent to tweLve sacks of flour, the six measures of win which are
equivalent to a little more than fifty gallons and forty sheep by his priests.
The word Babel means “gate of God, Babylon was founded by Ninirod.
(GenJ.O: 8)
“The king revered it and went everyday to worship it. But Daniel worshiped his
own God. So the king said to him, “Why do you not worship Del?” FIe answered, “Because I do not revere idols made with
hands hut the living God, who created Heaven and Earth and has dominion over
all living creatures)’ (4,5)
Cyrus worshiped Bel because he believed that it was a
fierce and mighty god who even consumed all offerings brought to hini. Like all worshipers of idols, Cyrus wanted his
idol/god to he stronger and
more powerful than Cyrus himself is. As for Daniel, he worshiped the one and
only living god and he choose to follow the commandment of God concerning
worshipping idols (Exodus 20:3-5),
“After they had gone out, the king set out food for Bel.
Then Daniel ordered his servants to bring ashes and they scattered them
throughout the whole temple in the presence of the king alone. Then they went
out, shut the door and scaled off with the king’s signet and departed. “During
the night the priests came as usual, with their wives and children and they ate
and drank everythiug.” (14,15)
Daniel decided to place the ashes and knew that they would not notice it
especially that the temple was onLy lit by lamps. The
priests were very confident that hy the next day Daniel
would be dead, not realising that God was with him as He was with Joseph.
“Then the king was enraged, and he arrested the priests and their wives and
children. They showed him the secret doors through which they used to enter to
consume what was on the table,” (21)
Although the devil often appeal’s to have power for long periods of time but
there is always an end to his deceitfulness. Those who live with God come out
victorious.
