- Hananiah: “the Lord has
been gracious”
- Meshach: a Babylonian name, which possibly means “who is like the god Aku?” This name was given to Mishael.
- Mishael: “who is like god “.
Abed Nego: “servant of
(lie shining one, Nabu”. This name was given to
Azaria.
- Azariah: “the Lord helps”.
“They walked around in the midst of the flames, singing hymns to God and blessing
the Lord. Then Azariah stood stilt in the fire and
prayed aloud.”
Because they refused to worship the gold image built by Nebuchadenzzar,
they were thrown into the fiery furnace. They prayed to God and praised His
name and from their ordeal 1-Te saved them. We also in the midst of our tribulations
should stand, pray and ask for God’s help.
“Blessed are you, 0 Lord, God of our ancestors, and worthy of praise, and
glorious is your name for ever! For you are just
in all that you have done; all your works are true and your ways right,
and all your judgements are true.”
Azariah praised God in the fiery furnace proclaiming
his just and glorious nature. When faced with tribulations, some people condemn
God’s judgements and Ills dealings with them and think that God has forsaken
them,
“You have executed true judgement in all you have brought upon us and upon
Jerusalem, the holy city of our ancestors; by a true judgement you have brought
all this upon us because of our sins. For we have sinned and broken your law
in turning away from you; in all matters we have sinned grievously.” (5,6)
Humble people do not blame God for their own shortcomings. As Azariah said, the Lord brought upon the Israelites a true
judgement because of the sills that they committed despite God’s warning to
them through Joshua. (Joshua 23:244)
“You have handed us over to your enemies, lawless and hateful rebels and to
an unjust king, the most wicked in all the world and now we can
not open our mouths; we, your servants who worship you, have become
a shame and reproach.” (9,10)
Azariah explained bow God allowed an unjust king
to rule over the Jews and enslave them, Those who forsake the Lord become
vulnerable to the devil’s deception. “Return to me and I will return to you.”
